"What is a good typing speed?" is the first question every typist asks. The honest answer: it depends on what you type for - but the benchmarks below cover almost everyone.
The WPM chart
Under 30 WPM - Beginner. You are still looking at the keyboard. Focus on touch-typing basics and finger placement.
30-40 WPM - Average. This is where most adults sit. Comfortable for everyday use, chatting and school work.
40-60 WPM - Above average. Fast enough for most office jobs, university work and content writing.
60-80 WPM - Professional. The range employers love: data entry, transcription, development and professional writing.
80-100 WPM - Advanced. Top tier for everyday typists. At this speed your fingers keep up with your thoughts.
100+ WPM - Competitive. Leaderboard territory. The world record holders sit far above this, but 100+ already puts you ahead of 99% of typists.
Accuracy matters as much as speed
A 70 WPM score at 88% accuracy is worse in real work than 55 WPM at 98% - corrections eat the difference. Always read your WPM and accuracy together, and train accuracy first whenever the two fight.
